National Home and Hospice Care Survey

UID: 10107
Description
The National Home and Hospice Care Survey (NHHCS) is a series of nationally representative sample surveys of U.S. home health and hospice agencies. It is meant to provide descriptive information on home health and hospice agencies, their staff, their services, and their patients. Information collected on agencies includes the year an agency was established, the types of services provided, referral sources, specialty programs, and staff characteristics. Data collected on home health patients and hospice discharges include age, sex, race, ethnicity, services received, length of time since admission, diagnoses, medications taken, advance directive, and more. Surveys have been conducted in 1992, 1993, 1994, 1996, 1998, 2000, and 2007, but data is only available online from 1996 forward. Sample design varies by year, and the survey was redesigned and expanded for 2007. It now includes a supplemental survey of home health aides employed by home health and/or hospice agencies.
